AWA GUN DOGS HOME
WELCOME TO AWA GUN DOGS – PROFESSIONAL RETRIEVER TRAINING FOR THE WATERFOWLER!
We train retrievers fulltime for field and marsh with one goal in mind…that they become excellent working gun dogs and great companions! We here at AWA Gun Dogs are proud to say that we live to chase absolutely nothing but feathers!
Our Gun Dog Training program takes place right here in the heart of Duck Country – the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North Dakota! Our gun dogs are living the ultimate dream! They hunt just about everyday of the regular waterfowl season, early Canada Goose season, Spring Snow Goose season and even trips across the border to Saskatchewan, Canada! If we are not hunting…you can bet we are training! We have no off season…we live the lifestyle 365 days a year…it is what we do…it is our passion! You can follow our waterfowl hunting adventures at Anatidae Wingshooting Adventures AWA Waterfowling. Now you know what AWA stands for…and when you get to know me…your trainer…you will understand why it is all so fitting!
Our training facilities here in the PPR encompass nearly 2000+ acres of fields and scattered ponds. Much of this land is bordered by a large and very important body of water for both breeding and migrating waterfowl and other birds. We currently accept up to 10 student retrievers that are at least 6-7 months old. We will accept puppies and older dogs for training under some circumstances. The best part about this is that your dogs are treated as part of our family…and get our full undivided attention during training. I trained my first Black Lab back in the late 1990s (some 18 years ago) and have learned over and over that no two dogs are alike! We take a patient training approach…adjusting our training according to the individual. The overall goal being the same…creating a happy gun dog and companion! We certainly love and care for our retrievers…they are simply family to us!
One thing we enjoy doing here at AWA Gun Dogs is keeping clients up to date on how their dogs are progressing in training…it removes the “wonder if” factor. We share videos and photos frequently on Facebook and other social media platforms. We use social media for keeping in touch with family and friends…so we believe that keeping in touch with your dog should be no different. Simply put…we make the time to get photos and videos of our client dogs…it is an important part of our program. NOTE: the photos and videos of client dogs are meant to show progress and hope for what they are learning. By no means does it suggest a dog is solid because you see it doing something in the videos I post…and is ready for the hunting season…it all depends. It takes lots of hard work and time to produce an obedient retriever, a retriever that marks well, a retriever that runs blind retrieves, a retriever that works well with the handler….and last….a retriever that truly understands his or her job in the field and marsh. Just a reminder…the number of photos posted of your dog does not reflect the amount of training he or she is getting. We train everyday…all day and do not travel at all during the training season which begins March – August. Therefore, you can be sure your dog is getting the attention it needs during his or her stay.
In addition, make no mistake about it…learning to handle your dog is just as important as having a trained dog…an untrained handler and a trained dog is not going to work. So, I offer my time to help during the transition of your dog back to you…so please take advantage of that. I also encourage owners/handlers to take the initiative and keep the learning going for both dog and handler.
We do not breed dogs or sell puppies here at our facilities, however, we will occasionally have started or finished gun dogs for sale. If you are looking for a well bred retriever puppy, we can certainly help you in your search and can refer you to reputable breeders.
